  • Determining the "Correct" Patient Weight to use for Drug Dose Calculations

  • In this age of obesity, it's sometimes difficult to know the "correct" number to use for determining drug doses that are based on weight. Actual weight? Ideal Body Weight? Lean Body Weight?
  • Many clinicians calculate dosing by some factor of Ideal Body Weight. This is listed on the EPIC Screen, and is also available on many Web Calculators (click on link).
  • For example, Rob Morrison MD, when calculating doses for Muscle Relaxants and their antagonists, uses 110% of Ideal Body Weight (Pt. weight in Kg x 1.1)
