Transport of NICU and CCN patients to the OR

The OR Charge Nurse or NUS will call the NICU charge nurse (662-0084) to determine the transport status of the patient.

 

NICU Ventilated or Clinically Unstable patient

NICU Clinically Stable and non- vented patient

CCN patient

Anesthesia provider to transport with OR orderly   directly to the OR room.

NICU nurse and orderly to transport patient to the Holding Room.  The OR room should be ready to accept the patient into the room.  The NICU nurse stays with the patient in Holding Room but is not expected to stay longer than 15 minutes.

CCN nurse and orderly will transport the patient to the OR.  The OR should be ready and the nurse will not be expected to stay in HR longer than 15 minutes. 

OR RN or NUS calls  NICU to get patient ready 45 minutes before patient due in OR.

OR RN or NUS calls NICU  to get patient ready 45 minutes before patient due in OR.

OR RN or NUS calls NICU to get patient ready 45 minutes before patient due in OR.

OR RN activates sending for the patient 15 minutes before patient due in OR ( Room ready/ see below). OR NUS makes second call when anesthesia is on the way.

OR RN activates sending for the patient 15 minutes before patient is due in OR (Room ready/ see below). OR NUS will make a second call when the orderly is on the way.

OR RN activates sending for the patient 15 minutes before patient due in room. 

NICU RN gives hands off communication to anesthesia provider.

NICU nurse provides handoff communication to the anesthesia provider in HR.

CCN RN gives handoff communication to the anesthesia provider in HR.

Patient goes directly to room.

Patient goes to OR within 15 of arrival in HR.

Patient goes to OR within 15 minutes of arrival to HR.

Room ready means previous patient out of the room.

First case of the day:

 NICU will have the OR schedule and they will get the patient ready for transport at 0630.  At 0700, the OR NUS will call for the transport status of the patient.  The charge nurse on NICU will decide the transport status.  The OR NUS will send for the patient to arrive at 0730-0740. 

CCN   will get the patient ready for the OR at 0630.  The OR will call the unit to send for the patient.  The CCN nurse will transport the patient to the Holding area for 0730 and be relieved by anesthesia.  The expectation is that the CCN nurse can return to the unit in fifteen minutes.

*Thursday morning starts for the OR are 0830 so adjust the day by an hour.
